This Montclair kitchen was a budget renovation in the truest sense. The homeowner was on a very limited budget, and this was really more of a favor than a paying job. The goal was to make the biggest difference with the least money, which meant keeping everything that still worked and refreshing what didn’t.
The countertops were covered in very old tile. The tile itself was still sound, but the grout had worn, stained, and broken down over the years, and that made the whole counter look tired and harder to keep clean. Replacing a tile countertop means demolition, new substrate, new tile, and new grout. Regrouting skips all of that. I cleared out the old grout from the joints and put in fresh grout. New grout lines instantly make old tile look cleaner and more uniform, and they seal the joints again against water and food.
Then I painted the cabinets. Paint is one of the most cost-effective updates in any kitchen, and on cabinets the prep is what matters: cleaning off years of kitchen grease, filling and sanding dings, and priming where the finish needs it, so the paint bonds and lasts instead of chipping at the handles.
Together, those two changes gave the kitchen a fresh, cared-for look without new cabinets or new counters. The homeowner was very, very pleased.
Not every kitchen needs a remodel. Sometimes the right answer is fixing what’s worn and letting the rest shine.
