El Sobrante Hearth, 2017

A hearth has to do two things at once: stand up to heat and wear in front of the fire, and sit so naturally in the floor that it looks like it was always there. In this El Sobrante home, the new hearth had to meet the existing leathered marble floor flush, with no lip and no step.

Choosing the tile

The tile was a faux-slate ceramic, chosen not for cost but for its texture and size. Each piece is 36 inches long, so just two tiles make up the full six-foot hearth. Large pieces mean fewer joints, and fewer joints read as calmer and more deliberate, especially in front of a fireplace, where the eye naturally rests. The slate texture gives the hearth depth without the upkeep of real stone, which has to be sealed and is harder to work with.

Setting it flush

Leathered marble has a soft, textured finish, and this floor had some imperfections, as older stone floors often do. Its surface wasn’t perfectly even, so the hearth couldn’t simply be set on a standard thin layer of mortar and expected to line up. Instead, the mortar was bedded to height: built up and adjusted under each tile until its surface met the marble flush along the whole edge. Large-format tile helps here, because one long piece bridges small variations, but it also means any mistake shows across six feet. Each tile back was cleaned before setting, and the mortar was polymer-modified for a strong bond.

Closing the joint

Where the new hearth meets the marble floor, the joint was filled with grout. Both surfaces sit on the same plane, so grout seals the seam and ties the two materials together visually, leaving one continuous floor with a hearth set into it rather than sitting on top.
