This San Pablo condo got a lot of mileage out of a pretty small budget. It wasn’t a full remodel. It was a set of well-chosen upgrades, each picked for how much it would change the look and feel of the place per dollar spent.
Keep the cabinets, change the counters
In most kitchens, the cabinets are the biggest single cost of a remodel, so leaving them in place is the fastest way to keep a budget small. These cabinets were sound, so they stayed. The countertops were replaced instead. Counters are the largest horizontal surface in a kitchen and the first thing the eye lands on, so new tops make an older kitchen look updated without the cost, demolition, and downtime of new cabinetry.
Window casings
Many condos are built with bare, drywall-wrapped window openings. New window casings give each window a frame and each room a sense of finish. It’s one of the highest-value upgrades there is: modest in cost, quick to install, and you don’t notice what was missing until it’s there. Casings are cut and fitted, puttied, sanded, and painted, so they look like part of the architecture rather than an afterthought.
Paint
Fresh paint ties everything together. The process was the same as always: patching holes and dings, removing switch plates and outlet covers, taping every edge and anything that couldn’t come off, priming where the color changed substantially, and finishing with at least one full coat. Walls in matte and trim in gloss white give a clean contrast that makes new casings stand out.
Small improvements, big difference
Beyond the kitchen, a cluster of small improvements went into the bathroom and main living space: the kind of fixes and finishing touches that individually seem minor but together make a home feel cared for.
That’s the point of a project like this. You don’t need a large budget to change how a home looks and feels. You need to spend it where it shows.
