Walnut Creek Squeaky Floor And Travertine Repair, August, 2024

This Walnut Creek home had two problems that often turn out to be related: cracked travertine tiles and a squeaky floor.

Why tile cracks, and why floors squeak

Tile and stone are rigid. They don’t bend, so when the floor beneath them moves, they crack. A squeak is usually a sign of that same movement: subfloor panels shifting against loose fasteners or rubbing against framing as someone walks across them. Replacing cracked tile without addressing what’s moving underneath is a temporary fix at best, so the work here went below the surface too.

Working from the crawl space

Fixing the squeaky section of floor required some demolition over the crawl space. Opening it up gives direct access to the subfloor and framing, where the movement actually happens. From there, the loose areas can be refastened and supported so the floor stops shifting underfoot. Then the floor is closed back up, solid and quiet.

Getting cracked stone out cleanly

The travertine tiles were 18-inch squares, and the cracked ones had to come out without damaging the tiles around them. That’s the tricky part of any stone repair. Travertine is natural stone, so the neighboring tiles are brittle, can’t simply be swapped for a matching piece off the shelf, and chip easily at the edges.

The work starts with cutting the grout lines out completely around each damaged tile, so it’s no longer bonded to its neighbors. Then the tile is broken out from the center toward the edges, never pried against the surrounding stone. The old mortar is cleaned down to a flat bed so the replacement sits at exactly the right height, flush with the tiles around it. Each new tile is set, grouted to match, and sealed, since travertine is porous and needs a sealer to resist stains.

The removal was somewhat tricky, but we’re happy with the results. The floor is solid, quiet, and whole again.
